Peachy Plays Baseball

I did many fun things over the summer holidays and I had many new experiences and exciting adventures. Some days mommy, daddy, and I went exploring distant places and making fun family memories. Other days we explored a bit closer to home but we didn’t cut back on having fun.

One of the best things about exploring around our neighbourhood is that when we discover amazing new places, we can easily go there again. In our local travels we love to visit different community parks to see what they have to offer. We made a great discovery when we stumbled upon the Sonoma Heights Community Park.

It’s a large park with many activities for the whole family. When we arrived I immediately spotted the water park and playground next to the parking lot. I was eager to get in there but mommy quickly squashed my hopes by informing me that we did not bring my bathing suit. That was a bit of a disappointment and I made mommy promise me that we would return one day a bit better prepared.

We detoured around the water park area to see what else we could find. My disappointment quickly melted away as I discovered how much room to run around the Sonoma Heights park has. There is green grass as far as the eye can see with paved walking paths that are very stroller friendly. Of course I quickly diverged off the path and headed for a fenced in area.

I located an opening in the fence and found myself in a strange place. It was a large area, square on two sides and rounded on the other end, like a quarter of a pie. Where the two straight lines meet is an area covered in some sort of reddish substance resembling fine gravel, while the rounded end is grass. I’m familiar with grass but the reddish substance was new to me so I took a close look.

It feels funny

Once mommy and daddy caught up with me they told me this was a baseball field and that people play a sport called baseball here. I had never heard of baseball before but I was up to the challenge and ready to give it a chance. After all, I may be new to baseball but I’m an expert at play.

After dusting the reddish substance off my hands I jumped up ready to play. Once again I was advised that we were not prepared for baseball as we didn’t have the necessary equipment. One disappointment per day is all I am willing to put up with. I was determined to play baseball one way or another.

Ready to play

Daddy showed me the lines painted on the reddish substance and the bases at each corner. Then we walked over to the middle and daddy explained the pitcher’s mound and what role the pitcher plays. All these explanations made me somewhat confused. Seeing my bewildered expression, daddy took me to the outfield and explained that this is where all sorts of running around happened. I’m good at running around and I immediately found my love for baseball.

I ran to one end of the field and then the other. Daddy tried to keep up but I’m too fast for him. Clearly I was winning at baseball. Next I headed for one of the bases careful to avoid mommy in case she had plans to snatch me up and put an end to my fun. That’s when I spotted something on the field.

I paused briefly for a closer look. It was a bird! I took off in pursuit. I ran as fast as my feet would go and I almost had him but at the last moment the bird opened its wings and flew away. I waved goodbye to him as I watched him go with a touch of disappointment.

Chasing birds

The feeling didn’t last long as I quickly spotted another bird and took off in pursuit. It turns out that baseball involves lots of birds if you know to look for them. I spent a good half hour chasing the birds and although I didn’t manage to catch any, I’m still fairly certain that I won at baseball that day.

After chasing the birds I was a bit tired and I allowed myself to be strapped into my stroller. Mommy and daddy took me back to the path and we had a nice stroll. We saw a tennis court, several soccer fields, and lots of pretty things to look at.

Before heading back to the car, we found a bench and I had a nice snack. Baseball sure works up an appetite. We then headed back to our car to get ready for home. Even though Sonoma Heights Community Park is only about a 10 minute drive from home, I fell asleep on the way. Apparently baseball is pretty exhausting.
